Stage 1

Botanical Foundations & Ethical Wild Harvesting

When sourcing native seeds and cuttings for ecological restoration, maintaining regional genetic integrity is critical. Plants adapted to specific Willamette Valley or Cascade foothill microclimates possess natural resistances to local pathogens, drought cycles, and soil chemistry.

The "20% Rule"

Never harvest more than 20% of mature seed or vegetative material from a single wild population patch during a single season to ensure adequate forage and natural regeneration remain for local wildlife.

Provenance & Mapping

Every collection batch must be tagged with exact GPS coordinates, elevation, aspect, and associated overstory species (e.g., Douglas-fir/Oregon white oak transition zones).

Stage 2

Nursery Cultivation, Stratification & Propagation

Step-by-step greenhouse protocols for breaking dormancy, mixing media, and growing resilient plug stock.

Cold Stratification Setup Protocol:

  1. Sanitization: Soak seeds in a mild 10% bleach solution or hydrogen peroxide bath for 10 minutes to eliminate surface mold spores.
  2. Moisture & Medium: Mix clean, damp horticultural perlite or coarse builder's sand with the seeds in a 3:1 ratio. The medium should feel like a wrung-out sponge.
  3. Cold Storage: Seal in perforated polyethylene bags and place in refrigeration (34°F to 40°F) for the duration specified by the species (typically 30 to 120 days).

Official Propagation References

Consult official guides for species-specific germination charts and greenhouse sanitation standards.

Stage 3

Hillside Outplanting & Erosion Bioengineering

Translating nursery stock into living infrastructure on steep, post-wildfire, or degraded slopes.

Live Staking Mechanics

Install dormant stakes (willow, dogwood) from November through February. Drive stakes at least two-thirds into a pre-piked contour hole with buds pointing upward, tamping firmly to eliminate air pockets.

Container Plug Geometry

Dig planting pits twice as wide as the root plug, but never deeper. Apply a 3-inch ring of coarse wood mulch around the base (keeping clear of the direct stem) to retain summer moisture.

Stage 4

Propagation Knowledge Verification

Select an answer to reveal detailed operational explanations.

1. A recruit is installing dormant willow live stakes along an unstable stream bank. They drive a stake halfway into the ground upside down (with the distal bud ends pointing toward the earth). What will occur?
