Module Overview & Field Protocols
This track establishes foundational competency in sustainable high-tunnel management, soil texture analysis, organic amendment dosing, and passive moisture balancing. Recruits will master testing soil composition to match optimal crop yield parameters across Willamette Valley microclimates.
Unit 1: Soil Texture & Composition
Understanding the ratio of sand, silt, and clay. Field testing via ribbon tests and jar settling methods to evaluate drainage rates, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and organic matter content.
Unit 2: Micro-Irrigation & Fertigation
Configuring pressure-compensating drip tape, liquid organic fertilizer injection rates, and moisture sensor threshold triggers to prevent nutrient leaching and root saturation.
Ag Systems Knowledge Verification
Select an answer to reveal detailed operational explanations.
1. What is the primary indicator of heavy clay content during a field ribbon test?
2. Why is drip irrigation preferred over overhead sprinklers in high-tunnel cultivation?
