1. Test Seed Readiness
Gather on dry afternoons. Seed heads should be brown, dry, and papery. Seeds should separate easily from the stalk when rubbed gently between gloved fingers.
2. Collection Motion & Tagging
Gently strip seed heads into paper bags or clip seed pods using hand pruners. Label every bag immediately with: Species, Harvest Location, Elevation, Date, and Collector Name.
3. Air Drying (24-48 Hours)
Spread harvested seed heads onto screens or kraft paper in a warm, dry, well-ventilated room. Stir daily to ensure uniform drying.
4. Winnowing & Cleaning
Rub dried seed heads over wire mesh screens to separate pure seeds from chaff and leaves. Store clean seed in airtight containers with desiccant packs in a cool, dark room.
